How to Bring Your Garden Indoors

The benefits of growing plants, herbs, or vegetables are many, and if you live in a city or other area with few suitable areas for outdoor gardening, you can enjoy those benefits by growing your plants indoors. But if you are new to gardening, you’ll want to take it slow when it comes to starting a garden inside your home.   1. Find an ideal area:

    The plants you choose for your indoor garden will benefit from natural light and consistent temperatures, both factors that can be unreliable depending on what area of the country you live in. Generally speaking, having your garden by a window that receives a lot of afternoon sunlight is a good idea. One option to consider if you live in a small apartment is to create a mobile planter so that you can move your plants to whichever area of the home that is getting the most light throughout the day.

  2. Limit the number of plants:

    Limiting the number of plants for your indoor garden will prevent overcrowding and allow you the time you need to get the hang of growing your plants, vegetables, or herbs. Each plant should be spaced apart so that each is receiving the light that it needs. If one plant starts to go bad, consider pulling it to make room for the stronger ones.

  3. Decide what to grow:

    Pretty much anything that grows outside can be grown in your home in a container. Herbs, certain types of lettuce, radishes, peppers, tomatoes, carrots, and green beans are all good candidates for your indoor garden. Growing common varieties of plants indoors will help reduce indoor air pollution.

  4. Use potting soil:

    Outdoor soil won’t work for your indoor plants. It’s too high in sand and clay and doesn’t contain the nutrients you need to grow a healthy plant indoors.   5. Use proper lighting:

    The changes of season, tall surrounding buildings, and a lack of natural light will challenge even the most resilient of indoor-grown tomatoes. Investing in special lighting for your indoor garden will help compensate for a lack of natural light. Incandescent lights are good for low-light house plants while fluorescent lights are best for vegetables and use 75% less energy than incandescent lights. LED lights are used for certain plants as well.

  6. Keep it clean:

    With each season, to prevent mold and plant disease, you should clean all of the pots and other equipment you are using for your indoor garden. Just use mild soap and warm water, and once your gardening area is clean, make sure it stays that way. Plants that do get sick or show signs of parasites should be thrown out as soon as possible.
