Does homeowners insurance cover a leaking portable storage unit?
A portable storage unit is considered to be personal property and not part of the “other structures” coverage provided by the homeowners insurance policy. But if the storage unit is permanently attached to the property, it would be covered differently because it would qualify as part of the dwelling and other structures.
That being said, a leak in the portable is not covered if the leak is from a lack of maintenance or an inherent defect in the shed itself. Coverage for the shed must result from a covered peril on the home insurance policy for it to be covered.
